About us

The Institute of Physics is a charity with an extensive worldwide membership (currently about 34,000). We are a leading communicator of physics with all audiences from specialists through government to the general public.

Since our foundation 130 years ago, we have developed a strong role in support of the science community by:

• providing valuable services for our members
• advising government and industry to help to secure the future for physics and related disciplines
• supporting teachers and students in the physical sciences
• raising awareness of the importance and relevance of physics in our everyday lives.

The Institute’s headquarters are located at 76 Portland Place, London. Our building provides members with access to a range of professional meeting and conference facilities run by IOP Enterprises. Our publishing company, IOP Publishing, is a global leader in scientific publishing and the electronic dissemination of high-quality research.
