Clare Mills - Science and HE Administrator

"When I discovered the Institute, I was looking for a job to make the most of my administration skills. I didn’t want to work in a corporate environment and was really interested in getting involved in the education, training or charity sectors. When the job at the Institute came up, it made perfect sense - despite the fact that my degree was originally in English and Drama!

As Science and HE Administrator, I provide administrative support for the Director of Education and Science as well as the directorate as a whole. It’s definitely varied - I spend my days handling diaries, arranging meetings and events and administering one of the Institute’s grants schemes. It’s rewarding work, especially when I’m organising events - I’m involved from start to finish, so there’s a real sense of satisfaction when things go well. The most challenging aspect of my role is the fact that I provide support for lots of people and have to balance their various priorities - although it definitely makes my life more varied and interesting, and I’ve certainly enjoyed plenty of training to get up to speed.

I’ve even been sent on a number of courses - the Institute is really good at promoting staff training and runs in-house courses on everything from customer service to time management. I’ve also received training from external providers - Minute Taking and Advanced Microsoft Word - after I identified the need to improve my skills. You have an appraisal with your manager twice a year and as well as assessing your performance, there’s a lot of emphasis placed on development needs."
